The first time I slept with Arabella was totally unexpected. Well, I’d been courting her for weeks so I guess not that unexpected, for me at least.

She still took me by surprise.

I’d been working away, we’d chatted over video, but mostly by text. She had been out walking with the dogs as they slowly adjusted to life on the outside of a kennel.

We had done kisses by text, you know, the odd one at the end of a comment, but nothing more. Not since the kiss in her kitchen. I had that one firmly tucked away in my memory, to call on when I wanked in the shower.

When I got home, I unpacked and decided to surprise her. I’d bought gifts. Typically, I didn’t think it through. I turned up. She wasn’t in. I waited. Waited some more. Gave up and went home.

Fuck, I’d got it bad. I had people all over the world at my beck and call, and she wasn’t even in when I called. Unlike almost everyone I knew, her life didn’t revolve around me. I loved that. It made me want her more.

I worked at my home desk, looking out on the cityscape, when my phone beeped. She’d found my card on her doormat, and wondered if I wanted to join her for a pizza. I was desperate to join her, but didn’t let her know that, of course. Playing hard to get. What a joke. I checked my diary. Yeah, right, I would have cleared every appointment, anyway.

I said yes, it’d be fun.

An hour later, I’m on her doorstep again. Suddenly, the idea of letting her know I’d been there earlier seemed a scary admission. I felt, no, I knew it would seem too intrusive. An enormous bag of goodies in hand. The door opened. The dog had her back. Standing to attention at her side. She casually rubbed its snout as it sniffed before allowing me to pass.

My dog, yes I’d adopted a dog, was at the vet’s overnight for a surgery to stop her getting puppies. She’d been through enough already. Another set of pups was the last thing she needed.

I kept quiet about my first visit as I unpacked the dog chews. The new artisan quilt I’d found perfect for her bed after the last one ended up on the dog crate. Perfume with a simple gold chain bracelet secreted inside the box. The hound dropped her head on my knee. Yep, another pair of black jeans, same mistake.

When would I learn that dog hair, slobber and black denim not a good mix?

Arabella laughed and suggested I rinse them off in her bathroom. I found a pile of freshly laundered facecloths, intricate hand embroidery on each corner. Rubbed at my jeans and looked around at the haven of relaxation. Candles in large recycled hand-beaded jars. Artisan soaps in ceramic dishes.

I made a note to find local artisans who I could support and commission to refill her supplies.

She prepped the food. The pizza homemade.
